We currently employ over 200 persons throughout our six divisions.    We operate from three manufacturing facilities in the O’Meara Industrial Estate in Trinidad with the head office in the Capital, Port of Spain.

Our associate company, IMS Mecalfab LLC, is headquartered near Atlanta, GA and specializes in the design/build of supermarkets and similar retail environments.

  • 1970
    Nicholas Costa and Nazir Rasool build the first insulated, refrigerated truck body for the local ice cream distribution trade. 
  • 1972
    Mechanical Fabricators Limited established by Nicholas Costa and Nazir Rasool in rented premises at 92 Queen Street, Port of Spain.        Primary endeavour was the manufacture of refrigerated, insulated truck bodies for the local ice cream industry.   Based on initial success, the Company quickly grew and started manufacturing walk-in freezers and cold storage warehouses using similar production techniques & technology.

  • 1974
    Name changed to Mecalfab Limited.

  • 1978
    An automated machine to continuously laminate ISOWALL brand structural insulated building panels is purchased from the machine’s inventor Australia, ISOWALL (Australia) Pty.      The ISOWALL product line is launched throughout the Caribbean.   ISOWALL is an internationally known brand in the cold storage construction industry and there are over 25 factories worldwide.     ISOWALL cold storage warehouses are utilised by food distributors, meat processors, seafood exporters, pharmaceutical companies, supermarkets, fast-food outlets etc.

  • Due to the flexibility of application of the ISOWALL product, we have adapted it for use in office partitioning, toilet partitioning, building cladding panels, portable offices, temporary structures and specialist roofing applications.

  • 1979
    Purchased Styrotex (Caribbean) Limited, SCL.     Began manufacturing expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) products under the registered trade name of Styrotex.     
    SCL manufactures expanded polystyrene foam billets which is the insulating core used in the ISOWALL building panel.    Over the years, added numerous other Styrotex branded products like beer coolers, ice buckets, seedling trays, bat proofing, seafood export packaging, roof insulation etc.

  • 1984
    Constructed Cold Storage facilities for poultry processor called PIPASA in San Jose, Costa Rica.   Formed Costa Rican joint venture Company to pursue other projects.

  • 1985
    Commenced several cold storage projects in South Florida including Jetro’s Cash & Carry, Larry Kline Meats, Miami Meat Purveyors, Dutch Packing amongst others.

  • 1986
    Constructed property at #92 Queen Street and constructed “Mecalfab House” corporate headquarters building of 20,000 SF on 4 floors in the Capital, Port of Spain.  

  • 1987
    Completed construction of airline flight catering facility in St. Maarten (hurricane proof).   Facility has survived several major hurricanes without damage.
  • Won Prime Minister’s Export Award for the first time.

  • 1988
    50,000 SF Public Cold Storage Facility completed for Harbour Cold Stores (a member of the Grace Kennedy Group of Companies) in Kingston, Jamaica.    Entire construction completed in 11 months.

  • 1989
    New FREEZ-LOK Walk-In Freezer factory opened at O’Meara facilty.    FREEZ-LOK Walk-In Freezers and Coolers utilise cam-action panel connectors to greatly simplify the erection of the room.   This is a great advantage to our export customers as most rooms can be completely erected in 1 - 2 days.

  • 1990
    Began utilising skills gained over previous 18 years by fabricating and supplying specialist items (e.g. logging cabins, living quarters etc.) for the oil exploration and production industry.

  • 1993
    The VIKING range of dry goods and semi-insulated truck and van bodies launched.   Since that time, have also manufactured armoured vehicles, mobile blood banks, mobile libraries, horse carriages, fast food trailers etc.    Basically anything on wheels.

  • 1995
    Completed fabrication of two (2) specialist living quarters modules for BPAmoco Oil Company.    Units completely finished at Arima facility and transported to Galeota.

  • 2000
    Constructed pre-engineered Flight Catering Facility in Bonaire, N.A.

  • 2001
    Began representing the LENNOX brand of air conditioning equipment.

  • 2002
    Supplied over 400 tons of LENNOX air conditioning  to the new Movie Towne complex in Port of Spain and 300 tons to various Government built schools across the Country.

  • 2002
    Won Prime Minister’s Export award for the second time.

  • 2004
    Reintroduced pre-engineered building system for the rapid construction of low cost housing, site offices, classrooms, temporary accommodation units etc.

  • 2005
    Awarded  Caribbean distribution rights for KysorWarren refrigerated supermarket display equipment refrigeration.   This complements our existing refrigeration equipment lines and allows supermarkets and groceries throughout the region to deal with a “one stop shop” for all their fitting out needs.  Established IMS Mecalfab LLC.

  • 2007
    Opened third factory in O’Meara Industrial Estate, Arima, Trinidad.   This new facility is solely responsible for the fabrication of truck and van bodies and currently manufactures over 200 units per year.

  • Awarded very large design-build construction project for several office buildings, lecture halls and administrative buildings for the University of Trinidad and Tobago.

  • Won Prime Minister’s Export award for the third time 2007.

  • 2008
    Installed second ISOWALL pre-fabricated insulated panel line to triple production capacity of panels for pre-fabricated modular construction.

  • Installed third EPS (expanded polystyrene) production line to double current capacity
